SOI Tax Stats - SOI Bulletin: Fall 2023

SOI tax stats - 2023 IRS Data Book Table 17 (revised)
A table in the Fiscal Year 2023 IRS Data Book (Publication 55B) has been updated:
Table 17?— The cells containing the total number of Corporations returns filed for Tax Years 2014–2020 were revised due to a summation error. The underlying data comprising the total were correct. The corrected totals are now included in the revised table.

Selected historical and other data tables, previously published in the spring issue of the Bulletin are now only available on SOI’s pages of the IRS Website.

SOI Tax Stats - Filing season statistics
These tables present information from the population of all Forms 1040 processed by the IRS on or before week 30 of the calendar year. Returns filed primarily reflect income earned in the respective Filing Year, but exclude taxpayers who requested a 6-month filing extension by filing Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

The gross tax gap is the difference between true tax liability for a given tax year and the amount that is paid on time. It is comprised of the nonfiling gap, the underreporting gap, and the underpayment (or remittance) gap. The net tax gap is the portion of the gross tax gap that will never be recovered through enforcement or other late payments.
