August 9, 2022 — A Rhode Island woman today admitted to a federal judge that she falsely claimed to be a cancer-stricken U.S. Marine decorated with the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, and that she used those claims, the stolen identities of actual veterans, and fraudulent documents that she created to obtain hundreds of thousands of dollars in charitable benefits and services intended for injured veterans, announced United States Attorney Zachary A. Cunha.

Owner of Tukwila, Washington Thai restaurant sentenced to 18 months in prison for tax fraud totaling nearly $1 million
May 2, 2023 — The owner of ‘Simply Thai’ restaurant in Tukwila, Washington, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Seattle to 18 months in prison for willful failure to pay over taxes, announced U.S. Attorney Nick Brown. Keovilayvanh Rinthalukay pleaded guilty in February 2023, admitting that between 2015 and 2019 he withheld Medicare, Social Security, and federal income taxes from his employees’ paychecks, but instead of paying the taxes to the government, he pocketed the money for his own benefit.

Former Lincoln lawyer sentenced to two years in prison in tax case
March 21, 2023 — United States Attorney Steven Russell announced that Craig Hoffman, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was sentenced on March 20, 2023, in Lincoln by Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard for willful failure to collect or pay over employment taxes. Hoffman was sentenced to two years in prison. After his release from prison, Hoffman will begin a two-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system. Senior Judge Gerrard ordered Hoffman to pay $325,197.90 in restitution.
